About Our Organization

MISSION

To improve the care of the minority community living with HIV/AIDS through clinical consultation, education, and training for health clinicians serving this population.

To reduce racial/ethnic disparities regarding prevention, clinical treatment, and outcomes related to HIV/AIDS and other disease states.

HISTORY

Established in 1999, IMANI is a Not-For-Profit 501(c) 3 organization that was formed as a result of the 1998 Congressional Black Caucus' declaration of State of Emergency re: the overwhelming epidemic of HIV/AIDS in minority communities. IMANI was organized to educate minority clinicians on the clinical aspects of HIV disease and its impact on communities of color. The goal is to provide related education and training to individual clinicians and institutions that provide healthcare in minority communities in order to improve the care of people living with HIV/AIDS through clinical consultation, education, and training. Historically, particular emphasis has been placed on reaching providers who care for minority and other individuals who lack adequate health care and/or are high risk for HIV disease.

As an original member of the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Centers, IMANI was initially funded through the Congressional Black Caucus, and later through the Minority AIDS Initiative, with a mandate to increase the capacity of minority clinicians providing quality care for HIV-positive individuals.

IMANI has evolved to include a Black Clinical Research Consortium (BCRC) in addition to its more traditional services. The BCRC designs and implements clinical research projects related to minority patients with HIV/AIDS (and other disease states), and develops and maintains a national clinical research database of minorities with HIV/AIDS.
